Ajahn Sao Memorial Day

Today (3rd February) is Ajahn Sao Memorial Day.
Ajahn Sao is the teacher and friend of Ajahn Mun, who together inspired the great flourishing of Dhamma practise in Thailand now known as the Thai Forest Tradition. Very little is commonly known about Ajahn Sao compared with Ajahn Mun, but in Thai there is quite a bit of material about him. Most of you would be familiar with how he does things through the influence of his disciples -- one of Ajahn Sao's greatest disciples was Ajahn Tongrat, and Ajahn Tongrat's greatest disciple was unquestionably Ajahn Chah.
Anyway, on this day 79 years ago, Ajahn Sao passed away and entered parinibbāna. It happened like this:
Luang Pu Sao’s Last Breath
While Phra Ajahn Peng was waiting near Wat Phu at Huay Sahua village for many days, he didn’t see any sign of Luang Pu Sao and the group of monks returning, and so went back to Piboon Mungsahan to join in the Observance Day there. He asked for news of Luang Pu Sao, but nobody knew. The morning after the Observance Day, there was a car headed for Moon Pamoke district, so he was able to get a ride as far as Champasak. He waited for Luang Pu Sao and the group at Wat Ammatayaram, where a monk who was also a preceptor, Mao, was the abbot. He heard news from Mr. Roi Jumrut, who was from Ubon but had come to Champasak as a civil servant, that Luang Pu and his group would arrive in the evening – but he was severely ill, so they had to make preparations to receive him.
About four o’clock in the afternoon, they heard the whistle of a boat from far away. Ajahn Mao and Phra Peng thus went down to the monastery jetty to receive them. The boat was unable to approach the dock and had to continue upriver and pull in to the Sahn jetty, not far past the monastery. There they invited Luang Pu Sao to get in a smaller boat to go back down to the monastery dock once again. Krubajahn Dee disembarked at the Sahn jetty and arranged to send a telegram to the disciples in Ubon about Luang Pu Sao’s condition – his ears and lips had gone pale yellow and he was seen to be completely exhausted.
When the boat got to the dock, Ajahn Gong-gaew got out and fastened the moorings at the back of the boat, while Krubajahn Buapha got out and fastened the front. They lifted Luang Pu out of the boat and put him on a bamboo stretcher. At that time, the monks there included Krubajahn Gong-gaew, Krubajahn Buapha, Krubajahn Kham and Phra Peng – together they carried him up from the riverbank and brought him to the Observance Hall. When they lowered him down, Luang Pu was sitting with his eyes closed and his head down, very weak and fatigued. Krubajahn Buapha thus raised his hands in añjali and respectfully informed Luang Pu in a low and gentle voice – because he had seen that Luang Pu had been attending inwardly throughout the trip and would be sensitive to a loud sound – “Excuse me. At the moment we have arrived at the Observance Hall in Wat Ammatayaram in Champasak.”
Luang Pu slowly raised his head and saw the smaller Buddha statues in the hall. He asked for his folded outer robe to be brought to him and placed over his shoulder. He then paid his respects by bowing three times, and lowered his head once again, his hands stiff. When he saw that, Krubajahn Buapha brought some water over to gently mist Luang Pu with it, getting ready to arrange his posture so that he could lie down. When he put his hands on Luang Pu, he thus noticed that he had already breathed his last breath – on February 3rd, 2485 B.E. (1942), the third day of the waning moon in the third lunar month. He was 83 years old, and had been a monk for 63 rains’ retreats.
หลวงปู่เสาร์ละสังขารเลยแล้ว
คณะครูบาอาจารย์เจี๊ยะได้รออยู่บ้านห้วยสาหัว ใกล้วัดภูหลายวันไม่เห็นคณะหลวงปู่มา จึงได้กลับมาลงอุโบสถที่พิบูลฯ และได้ถามข่าวก็ไม่ทราบความ หลังจากลงอุโบสถเสร็จ วันรุ่งขึ้นได้มีรถจะไปเมืองมูลปากโมกข์ จึงได้ขึ้นรถไปลงจำปาศักดิ์ รอคณะหลวงปู่เสาร์ที่วัดอำมาตยาราม ซึ่งมีพระอุปัชฌาย์เม้าเป็นเจ้าอาวาส ได้ทราบข่าวจากนายร้อยจำรัส ซึ่งเป็นคนอุบลฯ ไปรับราชการที่จำปาศักดิ์บอกว่า ตอนเย็นคณะหลวงปู่เสาร์จะมาถึง ท่านอาพาธหนักให้จัดสถานที่รอรับด้วย
เมื่อตอนบ่าย ๔ โมง ได้ยินหวูดเรือดังมาแต่ไกล อุปัชฌาย์เม้าและพระเพิงจึงได้ลงไปรอรับคณะที่ท่าเรือวัด แต่เรือไม่จอด ได้เลยไปจอดที่ท่าศาล เลยท่าวัดไปไม่ไกล จึงได้นิมนต์ท่านลงเรือเล็กย้อนลงมาท่าวัดอีกครั้งหนึ่ง ครูบาอาจารย์ดีลงท่าศาล ได้โทรเลขไปบอกลูกศิษย์ท่านทางอุบลฯ อาการของหลวงปู่เสาร์ขณะนั้น ใบหู ริมฝีปากเหลืองซีด อิดโรยเห็นได้ชัด
เมื่อเรือมาถึง อาจารย์กองแก้วได้ลงเรือไปประคองหลัง ครูบาอาจารย์บัวพาประคองด้านหน้า ยกท่านขึ้นนั่งบนแคร่ไม้ไผ่ ในขณะนั้นมีพระที่อยู่ด้วยกันคือ ครูบาอาจารย์กองแก้ว ครูบาอาจารย์บัวพา ครูบาอาจารย์คำ พระเพ็ง ได้ช่วยกันประคองท่านขึ้นจากฝั่ง และนำท่านขึ้นไปในโบสถ์ เมื่อวางองค์ท่านลง ตัวหลวงปู่ท่านนั่งหลับตาคอตกในท่าเดิม อ่อนเพลียมาก ครูบาอาจารย์บัวพา จึงได้พนมมือกราบเรียนหลวงปู่ด้วยเสียงอันอ่อนนุ่มว่า
"ขอโอกาสขะน้อย ขณะนี้อยู่ในโบสถ์วัดอำมาตยาราม จำปาศักดิ์แล้วขะน้อย"
หลวงปู่ค่อยๆ เงยหน้าขึ้นดูพระพุทธรูปเล็กน้อย จึงได้สั่งให้นำผ้าสังฆาฏิมาพาดบ่า จากนั้นท่านกราบพระได้ ๓ ครั้ง แล้วพับคอลงเช่นเดิม เมื่อเห็นเช่นนั้น ครูบาอาจารย์บัวพาได้เข้าประคองท่านให้นอนลง เมื่อถูกองค์ท่านจึงรู้ว่าท่านละสังขารเสียแล้ว เมื่อวันที่ ๓ กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๕ แรม ๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๓ ปีมะเมีย สิริรวมอายุได้ ๘๓ ปี ๖๓ พรรษา
